1/25/06 Class Org Meeting Minutes

Attendees: Locomotive, Christian, Cbayracer, Clewless, Mobetter, SailSD, Mr. Clean

The team continued to cover the all important sail rules:

The team is now working on several ideas to resolve this apparant gap ---

  • revisit the "class cloth" concept -- use a class spec cloth for purchase volume (but this is available to individual sailmakers to allow local support). Further research done by the team yielded the following:
    • Depending on the cloth picked, not all sailmakers will have equal access (and thus any cost savings may vary)
    • This may complicate regional needs (heavy air regions needs heavier material than class minimums)
  • put some sail tech limits on the big mainsail while keeping the jib fairly hi tech.

The discussion moved towards the merits of CF over aramids in terms of value (performance & shape durability). Options are:

    • allow up to aramid for jib & main
    • allow up to carbon for jib & main
    • allow up to aramid for jib, up to carbon for main
    • allow up to carbon for jib, up to aramid for main
  • Also discussed whether the (proposed) 2 spins on board can be used tactically (reacher/runner)or just as a spare (both are AP). Consensus is towards permitting the former. Additionally, suggestion was made to allow an optional storm (chicken) chute for distance races as safety equipment.

TIMING: We are targeting to wrap up a set of provisional rules in time for the launch of the first few US boats. For those who are interested in the class rules being drafted, please PM me for a copy.

We adjourned after 1.5 hrs of discussion.

Again, thanks to all attendees for their contributions.
